Maintain a good impression by having your carpets cleaned

Maintain a good impression by having your carpets cleaned

Using A Professional Carpet Cleaning Service

You should consider using a professional carpet cleaning service if your carpet embarrasses you when visitors come to your home or if you have to maintain a good impression in your office or showroom. Using the right method to clean your carpets can make a big difference to their appearance and to their lifespan and – if you run a business – to your profits!

Prospective clients, if faced with dirty carpets, will be wondering if you take the same lazy, sloppy attitude in your work, and will likely think twice before hiring your services or ordering your products. The cost of cleaning the carpets in your offices suddenly becomes less significant when compared to the cost of lost business, future or current.

By having your carpets deep cleaned, they can be returned to their original brightness and fluffiness without the use of harsh chemicals that can damage them. And you no longer have to wait days for soaking wet carpets to dry out as you would if you scrubbed them with a traditional carpet shampoo.

Professional carpet cleaning can deep clean your carpets right down to the base. The usual processes used are hot water or steam, but there is now an alternative. Low-moisture carpet cleaning systems can now clean your carpet thoroughly and deeply, while leaving them dry enough to use immediately.

This type of system allows you and your family -or your customers – to be able to walk on the carpets just minutes after they been cleaned. Imagine how important this would be if you run a hotel or guest house! Such very low moisture methods utilize the best of the other techniques available to offer a solution that neither abrades the fibres of your carpet, as traditional cleaning methods can do, nor soaks the carpet and the floor underneath if the water collection system is not as efficient as it should be.

Low moisture carpet cleaning – sometimes called dry carpet cleaning – can clean your carpet effectively and efficiently, and can clean a pure wool carpet without soaking it and causing the fibres to shrink, and a synthetic fibre carpet without damaging these fibres or fading the colors.

Nor will it wet your floor or underlay underneath, which tends to raise any dirt trapped between the floorboards, the concrete or in the underlay up into the carpet. Have you ever wondered why liquid spilled on your carpet often seems to make much more mess than you would have expected? Wet cleaning methods can dissolve the dirt on and between the floorboards or underlay and draw it up into the carpet.

Not so with the modern very low moisture techniques used today by many professional carpet cleaning services. You carpet is cleaned quickly, effectively and you can use it almost immediately after cleaning. If you carpet is at home, you can have it cleaned and then use it right away without having to tie the kids up to keep them out!

Another advantage of these modern very low moisture cleaning systems is that they are extremely safe for children and pets, especially if you choose a cleaning method which has been independently certified, for example by Green Seal or a similar independent body. They can also reduces allergens such as dust mites by up to 90%. So, if you are any of your family or employees are asthmatic, this is the ideal professional carpet cleaning services in Arlington for them, and you will be regarded as a responsible employer.

Yes, there are many other carpet cleaning systems in Arlington TX available to you, but modern technology IS wonderful in this case, and more individuals and employers should take the time to find out what solutions there are to make life easier for them, and professional carpet cleaning services that use modern technology are a prime example of that.

Looking after your bed is about as important as looking after yourself

Looking after your bed is about as important as looking after yourself

Mattress Cleaning and Bed Bugs

mattress cleaning services in Arlington TexasHorror! A few days ago we went into panic in our house – I thought we had bed bugs. Thankfully, it turned out to be a rogue mozzie munching his merry way around the house. Rather inhumanely I squashed him…I wasn’t feeling very charitable at the time.

The bed-bug incident, however, inspired a good old clean of the mattresses and bedding. Bed bugs are not something I really want to see in my home, so I try hard to keep the mattresses clean and the bedding aired.

Daily I air and make all the beds; weekly everyone gets new pyjamas. Twice a month I change the duvet covers, pillow covers and undersheets; monthly I vacuum the mattresses and turn them.

This may seem a little excessive, but pick up a cushion from your sofa and give it a good bang. How much dust hurtles out? I’d guess a fair bit, even if you bash your cushions fairly often.

Fabric gathers dust like a magnet gathers paperclips; a mattress is no different. Even if you don’t have allergies, if you leave your mattress unattended for long enough, you too will start to sniffle and sneeze.

If you don’t often clean your mattress, I would recommend going to whole-hog first and go for professional mattresses cleaning in Arlington TX. A bit of advice: get the cleaner in in the morning, so that your bed is dry and ready to sleep in the same night.

Steam cleaning will remove dirt and stains that appear either when something is spilled, or on an unaired mattress. Our bodies create moisture that hangs around when the mattress isn’t aired – which is why you see those brown tidemarks appearing.

With the steam-cleaned mattress all beautifully clean, you can start to put some systems in place to prevent the need for another steam-clean for up to a year.

Most importantly, air your bed. Each day, when you wake up, throw your duvet back, to leave the undersheet uncovered. Go shower and get dressed, have breakfast, then make your bed before you leave the house. Drying your mattress after you’ve slept in it all night will prevent brown stains and keep you and your mattress healthy.

To get rid of dust mites, once a month sprinkle baking soda on the mattress and leave it for a couple of hours then vacuum thoroughly; turn the mattress and do the same on the other side. Not only will it get rid of damp, mould and mites, but fragrant beauty will return to your bedroom.

Wash your duvet and pillows twice a year, or so. For once, tumble-drying really is the better option; after washing, add a couple of tennis balls into the drier so they bounce around and fluff your duvet and pillows.

Looking after your bed is about as important as looking after yourself, or your car. Make sure bed bugs, mites and moulds don’t make it into your bed.

Omega Steam explains the health benefits of carpet cleaning

Omega Steam explains the health benefits of carpet cleaning

Health Benefits of Professional Carpet Cleaning

carpet cleaning in Arlington TXMany people suffer from breathing problems such as asthma and snoring due to the dirt trapped in their carpets. Vacuuming alone is not enough. Even though it is recommended that you vacuum your carpets at least 3 times every week it is also crucial that you have Professional Carpet Cleaning done professionally at least once every year. The benefits go beyond your home looking neat. Your family’s health also benefits a great deal from this professional cleaning.

Professional Carpet Cleaning gives your carpet a deep clean that removes pollutants that may have been trapped therein. Cockroach allergens, pet dander, particle pollution, dust, dirt, and even lead are some of the pollutants that can be found trapped in a dirty carpet. Airborne gases that could be toxic can also carry particles that can be trapped in the carpet. They are then released as you go about your day to day activities of walking on the carpet or vacuuming. This will contaminate the air at home and you may begin to see the effects with family members developing breathing problems. When you get a professional service to clean the carpets they will come with special carpet shampoo formulas that will remove these pollutants from your carpet.

Another common problem especially in areas with high levels of humidity is mold. Dirty, dump carpets can develop mold especially in rainy weather when water and moisture is tracked onto the carpet. If this water is not immediately dried or vacuumed it can sink into the carpet creating the right atmosphere for mold to grow. Professional Carpet Cleaning on a regular basis can prevent and reduce incidents of mildew and mold growth. A professional carpet cleaner has high powered tools for drying, which will completely draw moisture from the carpet ensuring that it remains dry.

The other thing a Professional Carpet Cleaning service can do for you are clean out microscopic mites that can hide themselves in the carpet. It is possible to have a dust mite infestation and not know that you do. The effects of the infestation will only be known from allergic reactions experienced by the people living in the house. The dust mites are not allergens; however, they defecate and shed various body fragments that in turn become the allergens. Steam cleaning is the only solution for this as the carpet is exposed to very high temperatures that completely kill the dust mites.

Professional Carpet Cleaning is about making sure that all the grit, dirt, stains, allergens, and sand are successfully removed from the carpet. It is good to use both traditional and modern methods of cleaning to ensure that you get all the dirt and mites out of the carpet. A clean carpet is aesthetically pleasing, it lasts longer, and it is a much healthier carpet than one that is dirty and neglected. Green technology has also been introduced in the expert carpet cleaning business and it works better and is also pretty easy to use. Contact a cleaning service close to you and have your carpets professionally cleaned. It may save you a hospital bill or two.

Omega Steam’s tips for Keeping Your Carpet Looking Great

Omega Steam’s tips for Keeping Your Carpet Looking Great

The Benefits of Keeping Your Carpet Clean

Many people have various types of carpet in their home and nothing can quite give you that wonderful feeling of sinking your toes into soft, warm carpet. One thing that many people forget about when they have carpet is that their carpet needs to be taken care of if they want it to last and stay looking nice. It is very important that you make sure that carpet cleaning occurs a few times a year to keep your carpet at it’s best. There are a variety of benefits that you will be able to take advantage of if you make sure that your carpet is cleaned regularly.

Carpet cleaning services in Arlington TXKeeping Your Carpet Looking Great:

One of the benefits to regular carpet cleaning is that it will keep your carpet looking great longer. It is very easy for carpets to start looking old and dingy if you get behind in your carpet cleaning schedule, but making sure that you do a thorough carpet cleaning a few times a year will keep your carpet looking new and clean. While you are doing your carpet cleaning, you may also want to put protective chemicals on your carpet, as well, to protect it from spills and keep it looking great as long as possible.

Reduction of Allergies:

Another great benefit to regular carpet cleaning is that carpet cleaning helps to get rid of dust and other things in your carpet that may be causing your allergies to act up on a regular basis. Most people do not realize what kind of dirt and dust is buried in their carpet until they start the carpet cleaning process and start to see what is really there. Both allergies and eczema can be caused by carpet that has not had a recent carpet cleaning, and just cleaning your carpets a few times a year can help keep allergies and eczema from occurring as often.

Get Rid of Bacteria:

Little did you know that your carpet could actually be harboring a great deal of unhealthy bacteria. Because carpet can often get wet and damp, this is a great place for bacteria to start breeding and bacteria can be very harmful to your health. If you do regular carpet cleaning, you can use products that will kill the bacteria that is living in your carpet. As you begin to perform carpet cleaning on a regular basis, you may begin to notice that you are not sick as often, since the bacteria is being cleaned away with the frequent carpet cleaning. If you and your family are getting sick frequently, you may want to start having carpet cleaning done more often to see if that will help you.

These are just a few benefits that you will be able to enjoy when carpet cleaning in Arlington TX becomes more than just a once a year thing. Carpet cleaning should be done every few months for optimum benefits, and as you continue to have carpet cleaning done frequently, you will enjoy the multiple benefits that come with it. Your carpet will look wonderful, you will not have as many problems with allergies, and you will be getting rid of the harmful bacteria that may be living in your carpet.

While home remedies may work in some cases, professional upholstery cleaning will usually produce the best results

While home remedies may work in some cases, professional upholstery cleaning will usually produce the best results

Upholstery Cleaning Advice

You want your furniture to look fresh and clean. You have invested money and time into your sofa, love seat, and chairs. More importantly, your furniture creates the first impression your guests see when they enter your home. To protect your furniture from becoming dingy, you will want to maintain the fabric with regular cleaning. In addition, a spill on your furniture requires immediate upholstery cleaning to avoid setting stains. While home remedies may work in some cases, professional upholstery cleaning will usually produce the best results. Carpet cleaning companies offer quality upholstery cleaning service.

Routine Upholstery Cleaning

Dirt and dust can collect on the fabric of your upholstery. In addition to making your furniture look dingy, dirt and dust can cause stains if it becomes wet. Be sure to vacuum your upholstery weekly, working in short left to right strokes to prevent dust from settling into the fabric. To get in the cracks and crevices of your furniture, use an upholstery attachment. To get into button tufting and other tight spaces, blast away dust with a can of compressed air. If you have pets, be sure to remove as much hair as possible. A vacuum may not be sufficient for pet hair, and you may need to find an effective pet hair remover designed for upholstery cleaning.

Emergency Upholstery Cleaning

Spills are the most common source of upholstery stains. When a spill happens, time is of the essence. You don’t want to let the spill soak into the fabric, furniture stuffing, or wood. Here are a few tips to keep in mind for emergency upholstery cleaning. First get a white cloth and blot the spill. Never scrub or rub it as this can set the stain. Try to keep the spill from spreading into a larger area. Next, add a little mild dish soap to water. After testing it on an inconspicuous spot of the fabric, blot the solution onto the spill, using only enough to just cover it. Let the spot dry completely. If the fabric has a high pile, brush the fibers in the correct direction. Tip: If you have spilled grease on your furniture, sprinkle a little cornstarch on the spill and let it sit for 30 minutes. When it has absorbed the oil, vacuum it up.

If your upholstery has stains, there are a few steps you can try before a professional upholstering cleaning. First vacuum the stained area thoroughly to try to fade the stain. Next check your upholstery cleaning instructions to determine whether you can clean with water or must use other cleaners like vinegar or chemical solvents. Many pieces of furniture may not have instructions, especially if they are vintage or antique. In this case, test the cleaner on a hidden spot of fabric.

If your upholstery can be cleaned with water, use a little steam to loosen the stain and make it easier to treat. The steam button on an iron can work for this in a small area. Dip a sponge in a mild dish soap and water solution, wring out the sponge, and blot the stain. Do not rub as this can weaken or pill your fabric. Press it dry with a clean cloth. If water can’t be used, try a little vinegar or vodka on a cloth. When the area is dry, the smell will disappear. If these steps don’t work, you can turn to one of the many upholstery cleaning products commercially available.

Professional Upholstery Cleaning

If this sounds too complicated, or you have tried it unsuccessfully, you may prefer to contact a professional carpet cleaning company in Arlington TX to handle your upholstery cleaning. Your furniture is an investment, and a professional upholstery cleaning will give you the best results. While you might save a little money trying to clean stains yourself, there is no substitute for the experience of a quality carpet cleaning service.

There are several factors that can influence how long the carpet cleaning will take to complete

There are several factors that can influence how long the carpet cleaning will take to complete

How Long Does Carpet Cleaning Take? A Guide For Customers

The short answer for how long does carpet cleaning take is: anywhere between 5 minutes and 3 days. Depending on the size of the area cleaned, its condition and stuff standing in the way of the cleaner (desks and chairs for example). In addition, there is time needed for the carpets to dry which should be added to the service time.

Now here’s the long answer

There are several factors that can influence how long the carpet cleaning in Arlington Texas will take to complete, as well as the length of time it will take for the carpet to dry afterwards.

    1. Size of area to be cleaned – the rule of thumb regarding carpet cleaning is usually 20 minutes per room for small rooms (bedrooms, hallways), and 30 minutes per room for large rooms (master bedrooms, living rooms, etc.). However, this is only a rule of thumb and not something you can depend upon. If the carpet is heavily soiled, stained, or just hasn’t been cleaned for a long time, several runs will be needed on the same areas, adding more time to the carpet cleaning. In addition, every run of the carpet cleaning wand adds more time to the drying time.
    1. The condition of the carpets – as mentioned above, heavy soiling, lots of grease or just some hard to remove stains can add a lot of time to carpet cleaning. Basically, a more soiled carpet will require a more thorough approach, including pre-spray and maybe even agitation with a special machine. This can add on another 10-20 minutes per room, not including set up time which may be a few more minutes.
    1. What the carpet is made of – Natural fibers take longer to dry than synthetic fibers, and also require a different treatment. Natural fibers are more delicate. In addition, they don’t repel stains and grease like most synthetic fibers do. In general, natural fibers like wool would require a more strict maintenance routine and more frequent cleaning to keep them looking their best.
    1. Additional solutions applied – Depending on the condition of your carpets and your requirements, there may be additional steps to carpet cleaning – pre-spray before the cleaning, or application of protector after the carpet cleaning is done. Each of these steps applies more fluid to the carpet, and creates more moisture that needs to dry. These steps can add as much as half an hour to the carpet cleaning, and can lengthen the drying time by two hours or more.
    1. Weather conditions – Carpet cleaning time isn’t affected much by the weather conditions (though bad weather can affect the set up time, making it harder to get everything ready for the cleaning). However, drying time is affected vastly by weather conditions. The carpet cleaning is done inside. When the weather cold, rainy, or even very humid, there is no option to air out a room and let fresh air inside. Good ventilation helps carpet dry more quickly, so bad ventilation can greatly increase drying time, Drying times can even double if the house is very cold with little or no air movement.
  1. Air movement – carpet in a well aired room with several windows, or even a ceiling fan would be able to dry faster than in a closed room with no air flow. Sometimes during winter, if your carpet cleaner can allow it, he will lay out a few drying fans to shorten the drying time of the carpets. Not all carpet cleaners do this, so if this is important to you ask about it before you schedule your appointment. This can greatly reduce drying time if the weather requires the house to stay shut (and there is no air ventilation system available – an HVAC unit you can turn on or a fan that will air the rooms).

How long will it take to clean my carpets?

We suggest you clear 1.5-2 hours for the cleaning appointment, and 6-8 hours for drying time of the carpets (but can go up to as much as 24 hours depending on the conditions). If you have the option, choose warmer weather for your carpet cleaning appointment.

Deck repair advice from Omega Steam Clean

Deck repair advice from Omega Steam Clean

Signs That it is Time For Deck Repair

Decks, just like our roof, siding and windows bear the brunt of the extreme ice, snow and cold temperatures during the winter and driving rain during the spring. Deck repair and maintenance is critical to ensure the longevity and safety of your deck. This article will help you determine if your deck is fit for service this season or is in need of repair and routine maintenance.

With the following tips, homeowners can quickly spot and diagnose some common problems associated with their deck’s exposure to the harsh winter weather. Taking action to resolve these issues quickly will help prevent premature failure and costly replacement of your deck and increase its function and longevity. Whether you decide to hire a professional to maintain or repair the deck, or do the work yourself, here are some common problems you should be looking for this spring.

Deck Repair and Maintenance Inspection Tips

Referencing the North American Deck & Railing Association’s Consumer Checklist, here are four problem areas I believe every homeowner can easily spot on their home’s deck.

  1. Decayed or Rotted Wood: Pay particular attention to areas that appear to remain wet. You want to find any wood that is rotted or decayed. If such an area has splintered, attempt to pull a piece off. Or, use a screwdriver to poke and pick at the wood. If it feels soft or spongy, that is a tell-tale sign that the wood must be replaced, indicating it is time to call a deck repair professional.
  2. Deck Fasteners: Fasteners include nails, screws and anchors. If you see a lot of nails sticking out, or screws that have corroded, this could be a sign of a bigger problem. Corroded, loose, or missing fasteners can continue to damage the wood around them and undermine the structural integrity of the deck, railings and stairs. If you spot such damage, consider calling a deck repair professional to further evaluate the problem.
  3. Railings, Banisters and Stairs: Push on the railing and banisters to make sure they are secure. Examine the deck surface and stair treads to make sure there is no sagging or cracked boards. Stand on the deck surface and deck stairs and shift your weight back and forth to see if there is any sway or excessive bounce. If you note any of these problems, this could be a sign that a deck repair is necessary.
  4. Cleaning and Maintenance: Mold, moss and discoloration all can damage the deck wood quickly if not quickly removed and properly sealed. Deck cleaning and maintenance is an entire topic in and of itself-so if you’re not comfortable cleaning and sealing your own deck, it is time to call a deck repair professional.

It is quite important to see that you take care of your home’s exterior

Basic Maintenance for Home

Did you know that there is more to your home’s exterior than just siding and paint? Sure, you may recognize that, but it should also be noted that your roof is also a part of the exterior of your home. After all, without the roof, your home’s interior would not be protected! (shocking, isn’t it?)

So, it is quite important to see that you take care of your home’s exterior. This doesn’t have to be a part of the basic To Do list that you check off weekly, but it should definitely be a part of that quarterly list! By doing so, you have a better chance of identifying home exterior concerns and being able to stay a step ahead of them – before they become full on problems that are costly to repair (or need to replace!).

If you are new to home ownership, then determining what type of checking on the home exterior needs to be done can be stressful. So, to help out, here are the place you need to be paying special attention to:

  • Gutters – The gutters of your home control the amount of rainwater reaches your home’s exterior and protect your roofing as well as your home’s siding. Be sure they are attached correctly and are not sagging anywhere. It is also important to clean them periodically so that there is no build up of debris.

  • Paint – Take time to note if you need to touch up an area or call in a professional painting crew. The status of the paint job/siding will be one of the first thing people notice.
  • Siding – If you have vinyl siding, or one of its sister products, then you will want to clean it off periodically using a pressure sprayer.
  • Windows – Be sure these are not just clean, but open and close as they are designed to do.
  • Patio or deck – e sure that the boards are sound, and that any debris is swept off of them. Not only does this look better, but you can prevent any damage caused by critters/pests. Be especially vigilant against areas around windows and doors – were wood rot can occur. If you notice damage near these locations, be sure to get someone to check it out and determine the action to be taken.
  • Roofing/Shingles – Walk around your home and note any areas where shingles may have pulled away or are loose/missing. If you see any, repair them before they fall away and leave your home exposed to the elements of nature.

Dealing with home exterior issues doesn’t have to be stressful. Do some basic maintenance and then be sure to connect with the right companies within your community to help with those aspects that you don’t feel qualified to do yourself.

Backsplash ideas to spruce up your kitchen

Backsplash Idea: Faux Stone Re-Finish

By Joe Provey

Faux Stone Backsplash

The faux-finished backsplash tiles. Photo: JProvey

My wife, Mary Ann, hated the backsplash tiles in our kitchen, and I agreed they were slightly dated. Unfortunately, the crackled glass that we wanted to replace them with was amazingly expensive: $17 per square foot (more than $500 for the 30 sq. ft. that we would need). So I did what any good husband would do—I stalled.

Related: 11 Backsplashes for a Unique Kitchen

But one day, while she was at work, I decided to do a little experiment. I applied a mixture of primer, glaze and artist’s oils to some spare tiles to see if I could create a faux stone finish that would give the existing tiles a fresh new look—at little to no cost. And it worked!

Here’s a step-by-step of how I created the look:

Step 1: Run a palm sander with a fine, 220-grit disk over the backsplash to roughen up the existing tiles. Clean the surface with a TSP substitute.

Step 2: Using a 6-inch foam roller, apply three coats of pigment shellac-based primer (I can recommend B-I-N by Zinsser); allow at least 45 minutes dry time between coats.

Step 3: To create the faux, mottled coloration you will need to purchase tubes of artist’s oil paints. I used Payne’s Grey (a bluish grey), Raw Umber, and Zinc White (about $6-$7 per tube) to get my Tuscan stone look. You will also need to purchase a clear alkyd glaze, similar to what you would use to create a faux wall finish (Benjamin Moore’s #409 00 is a good choice at $14 per quart.)

Step 4: In a disposable aluminum tray, mix a quarter-size dollop of the grey oil paint with a half-cup of glaze and test it on a part of the backsplash hidden from view (like behind the range). When you find a mixture that gives you about a 30 percent tint, wipe a coat over the entire backsplash using a cotton rag. Don’t worry about whether some gets on the grout; the joints will be colored.

Step 5. While the first coat is drying, mix the Raw Umber and glaze in the same ratio as above. Beginning where you started the first coat, apply the umber-glaze mixture with a balled-up rag. Use a stamping motion to allow about 25 percent of the first coat to show through. The folds in the rag will produce the random, mottled look of marble. If you don’t like the way your first attempts look, wipe it off with a rag dampened in turpentine and try again.

Step 6: You can create a stippled look by mixing the grey oil paint and glaze in a 50-50 ratio and apply with an old toothbrush. A fine, thin brush with long bristles will be best for veining.

Step 7:  The last step is to paint the grout. The product I used—Polyblend’s Grout Renew—is both a colorant and sealer. If you can’t find a premixed color that you like, buy the white and tint it yourself. Use artist’s acrylic paint, not oils, with water-based grout sealer.

The total cost of the project came to about $60, with half of that being a quart of shellac-based primer. Even better, it was done in 5 hours and in time for dinner!

How To: Preserve Your Jack-o’-Lantern for Halloween

How to Preserve a Carved Pumpkin - Jack o' Lantern

No amount of candy corn can make up for the moment you realize that your carefully carved pumpkin’s smile has turned into a rotting grimace just as the trick-or-treaters start showing up at the door. The freshest pumpkin is carved October 31, so if you are tempted to start the festivities earlier, follow these tips to make sure there will still be a plump pumpkin to greet the neighborhood kids once the big day arrives.

With a keyhole saw, either take off the top of the pumpkin (best if you intend to put a candle inside), or make a hole in the back. Then dig out the pumpkin pulp with a scraping tool—a spoon can do, but it helps to have something with a sharp edge or teeth. Be sure to remove one hundred percent of the pumpkin guts. Carve the gourd by affixing a stencil and using an awl—or another thin, sharp tool—to outline the pattern with small holes before cutting. Then dig in carefully with a miniature saw or sharp knife to complete the Jack-o’-Lantern’s face. Even a drill can double as a carving tool—use a ½ inch or ¾ spade bit for making the eyes.

Once you’ve got the perfect ghoulish grin, the preserving process begins. Joyce Martin Demchak, a floral design instructor with the New York Botanical Garden Adult Education Program (and pumpkin expert) suggests drying the pumpkin interior using a paper towel. “Carving the pumpkin exposes it to the air, and to bacteria, which is what causes pumpkin rot,” says Joyce.

To delay the eventual decay, spray all open surfaces with bleach (an adult, not child-appropriate task), including the edges of its face and the bottom of the lid. If you don’t have a spray bottle, Joyce says that you can paint the bleach on with a craft brush. After bleach application, blot again with the paper towel to catch any residual moisture, then start smearing petroleum jelly—just a thin layer—on the interior, the cut-out spots, and the lid. The jelly provides a barrier to keep bacteria from reaching the flesh. Finally, set out Jack with a candle (which is safe to use despite the Vaseline) or use Christmas lights wrapped around a jar.
