Deck repair advice from Omega Steam Clean

Deck repair advice from Omega Steam Clean

Signs That it is Time For Deck Repair

Decks, just like our roof, siding and windows bear the brunt of the extreme ice, snow and cold temperatures during the winter and driving rain during the spring. Deck repair and maintenance is critical to ensure the longevity and safety of your deck. This article will help you determine if your deck is fit for service this season or is in need of repair and routine maintenance.

With the following tips, homeowners can quickly spot and diagnose some common problems associated with their deck’s exposure to the harsh winter weather. Taking action to resolve these issues quickly will help prevent premature failure and costly replacement of your deck and increase its function and longevity. Whether you decide to hire a professional to maintain or repair the deck, or do the work yourself, here are some common problems you should be looking for this spring.

Deck Repair and Maintenance Inspection Tips

Referencing the North American Deck & Railing Association’s Consumer Checklist, here are four problem areas I believe every homeowner can easily spot on their home’s deck.

  1. Decayed or Rotted Wood: Pay particular attention to areas that appear to remain wet. You want to find any wood that is rotted or decayed. If such an area has splintered, attempt to pull a piece off. Or, use a screwdriver to poke and pick at the wood. If it feels soft or spongy, that is a tell-tale sign that the wood must be replaced, indicating it is time to call a deck repair professional.
  2. Deck Fasteners: Fasteners include nails, screws and anchors. If you see a lot of nails sticking out, or screws that have corroded, this could be a sign of a bigger problem. Corroded, loose, or missing fasteners can continue to damage the wood around them and undermine the structural integrity of the deck, railings and stairs. If you spot such damage, consider calling a deck repair professional to further evaluate the problem.
  3. Railings, Banisters and Stairs: Push on the railing and banisters to make sure they are secure. Examine the deck surface and stair treads to make sure there is no sagging or cracked boards. Stand on the deck surface and deck stairs and shift your weight back and forth to see if there is any sway or excessive bounce. If you note any of these problems, this could be a sign that a deck repair is necessary.
  4. Cleaning and Maintenance: Mold, moss and discoloration all can damage the deck wood quickly if not quickly removed and properly sealed. Deck cleaning and maintenance is an entire topic in and of itself-so if you’re not comfortable cleaning and sealing your own deck, it is time to call a deck repair professional.

It is quite important to see that you take care of your home’s exterior

Basic Maintenance for Home

Did you know that there is more to your home’s exterior than just siding and paint? Sure, you may recognize that, but it should also be noted that your roof is also a part of the exterior of your home. After all, without the roof, your home’s interior would not be protected! (shocking, isn’t it?)

So, it is quite important to see that you take care of your home’s exterior. This doesn’t have to be a part of the basic To Do list that you check off weekly, but it should definitely be a part of that quarterly list! By doing so, you have a better chance of identifying home exterior concerns and being able to stay a step ahead of them – before they become full on problems that are costly to repair (or need to replace!).

If you are new to home ownership, then determining what type of checking on the home exterior needs to be done can be stressful. So, to help out, here are the place you need to be paying special attention to:

  • Gutters – The gutters of your home control the amount of rainwater reaches your home’s exterior and protect your roofing as well as your home’s siding. Be sure they are attached correctly and are not sagging anywhere. It is also important to clean them periodically so that there is no build up of debris.

  • Paint – Take time to note if you need to touch up an area or call in a professional painting crew. The status of the paint job/siding will be one of the first thing people notice.
  • Siding – If you have vinyl siding, or one of its sister products, then you will want to clean it off periodically using a pressure sprayer.
  • Windows – Be sure these are not just clean, but open and close as they are designed to do.
  • Patio or deck – e sure that the boards are sound, and that any debris is swept off of them. Not only does this look better, but you can prevent any damage caused by critters/pests. Be especially vigilant against areas around windows and doors – were wood rot can occur. If you notice damage near these locations, be sure to get someone to check it out and determine the action to be taken.
  • Roofing/Shingles – Walk around your home and note any areas where shingles may have pulled away or are loose/missing. If you see any, repair them before they fall away and leave your home exposed to the elements of nature.

Dealing with home exterior issues doesn’t have to be stressful. Do some basic maintenance and then be sure to connect with the right companies within your community to help with those aspects that you don’t feel qualified to do yourself.

Backsplash Idea: Faux Stone Re-Finish

By Joe Provey

Faux Stone Backsplash

My wife, Mary Ann, hated the backsplash tiles in our kitchen, and I agreed they were slightly dated. Unfortunately, the crackled glass that we wanted to replace them with was amazingly expensive: $17 per square foot (more than $500 for the 30 sq. ft. that we would need). So I did what any good husband would do—I stalled.

Related: 11 Backsplashes for a Unique Kitchen

But one day, while she was at work, I decided to do a little experiment. I applied a mixture of primer, glaze and artist’s oils to some spare tiles to see if I could create a faux stone finish that would give the existing tiles a fresh new look—at little to no cost. And it worked!

Here’s a step-by-step of how I created the look:

Step 1: Run a palm sander with a fine, 220-grit disk over the backsplash to roughen up the existing tiles. Clean the surface with a TSP substitute.

Step 2: Using a 6-inch foam roller, apply three coats of pigment shellac-based primer (I can recommend B-I-N by Zinsser); allow at least 45 minutes dry time between coats.

Step 3: To create the faux, mottled coloration you will need to purchase tubes of artist’s oil paints. I used Payne’s Grey (a bluish grey), Raw Umber, and Zinc White (about $6-$7 per tube) to get my Tuscan stone look. You will also need to purchase a clear alkyd glaze, similar to what you would use to create a faux wall finish (Benjamin Moore’s #409 00 is a good choice at $14 per quart.)

Step 4: In a disposable aluminum tray, mix a quarter-size dollop of the grey oil paint with a half-cup of glaze and test it on a part of the backsplash hidden from view (like behind the range). When you find a mixture that gives you about a 30 percent tint, wipe a coat over the entire backsplash using a cotton rag. Don’t worry about whether some gets on the grout; the joints will be colored.

Step 5. While the first coat is drying, mix the Raw Umber and glaze in the same ratio as above. Beginning where you started the first coat, apply the umber-glaze mixture with a balled-up rag. Use a stamping motion to allow about 25 percent of the first coat to show through. The folds in the rag will produce the random, mottled look of marble. If you don’t like the way your first attempts look, wipe it off with a rag dampened in turpentine and try again.

Step 6: You can create a stippled look by mixing the grey oil paint and glaze in a 50-50 ratio and apply with an old toothbrush. A fine, thin brush with long bristles will be best for veining.

Step 7:  The last step is to paint the grout. The product I used—Polyblend’s Grout Renew—is both a colorant and sealer. If you can’t find a premixed color that you like, buy the white and tint it yourself. Use artist’s acrylic paint, not oils, with water-based grout sealer.

The total cost of the project came to about $60, with half of that being a quart of shellac-based primer. Even better, it was done in 5 hours and in time for dinner!

How To: Preserve Your Jack-o’-Lantern for Halloween

How to Preserve a Carved Pumpkin - Jack o' Lantern

No amount of candy corn can make up for the moment you realize that your carefully carved pumpkin’s smile has turned into a rotting grimace just as the trick-or-treaters start showing up at the door. The freshest pumpkin is carved October 31, so if you are tempted to start the festivities earlier, follow these tips to make sure there will still be a plump pumpkin to greet the neighborhood kids once the big day arrives.

With a keyhole saw, either take off the top of the pumpkin (best if you intend to put a candle inside), or make a hole in the back. Then dig out the pumpkin pulp with a scraping tool—a spoon can do, but it helps to have something with a sharp edge or teeth. Be sure to remove one hundred percent of the pumpkin guts. Carve the gourd by affixing a stencil and using an awl—or another thin, sharp tool—to outline the pattern with small holes before cutting. Then dig in carefully with a miniature saw or sharp knife to complete the Jack-o’-Lantern’s face. Even a drill can double as a carving tool—use a ½ inch or ¾ spade bit for making the eyes.

Once you’ve got the perfect ghoulish grin, the preserving process begins. Joyce Martin Demchak, a floral design instructor with the New York Botanical Garden Adult Education Program (and pumpkin expert) suggests drying the pumpkin interior using a paper towel. “Carving the pumpkin exposes it to the air, and to bacteria, which is what causes pumpkin rot,” says Joyce.

To delay the eventual decay, spray all open surfaces with bleach (an adult, not child-appropriate task), including the edges of its face and the bottom of the lid. If you don’t have a spray bottle, Joyce says that you can paint the bleach on with a craft brush. After bleach application, blot again with the paper towel to catch any residual moisture, then start smearing petroleum jelly—just a thin layer—on the interior, the cut-out spots, and the lid. The jelly provides a barrier to keep bacteria from reaching the flesh. Finally, set out Jack with a candle (which is safe to use despite the Vaseline) or use Christmas lights wrapped around a jar.

You can replace or install your own garbage disposal

You can replace or install your own garbage disposal

How To: Install a Sink Disposal

How to Install a Garbage Disposal

Photo: KStansley

Depending on what part of the world you’re from you may have heard sink disposals referred to as “garbage disposals,” “food waste disposers,” or, if you’re really proper, a “sink waste disposal unit.” Whatever you call it, switching one out or installing a new one is a fairly simple task.

How to Install a Garbage Disposal - Under Sink

Photo: Kit Stansley

GETTING STARTED
There are essentially four connection points for a sink disposal:
– Where the disposal connects to the sink, under the drain
– Where the drain line connects to the disposal to remove water/waste
– Where the disposal connects to power
– Optionally, where the dishwasher connects to the disposal

The most important things to know are how the disposal gets power (either through a plug or direct connection) and whether or not you need a dishwasher line connected to the disposal.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS Available on Amazon
– Garbage disposal unit
– Outlet connection kit (if the disposal needs to be plugged into an outlet)
– Screwdrivers
– Hammer
– Plumber’s putty
– Putty knife
– One “self-service wrenchette” (included with disposal, and no, I’m not making this up)

I think this “wrenchette” answers the age old question of whether or not tool manufacturers have a sense of humor!

INSTALLATION

To prep your unit for installation, you may have to attach a cord with a plug to reach the outlet, or extension wires to reach a hardwired box. In this case, I attached a cord with a plug kit that I bought separately from the disposal unit. It’s as simple as feeding the wires from the cord through the disposal and attaching them to the matching colors on the unit with wire nuts.

If you have to hardwire the unit, wait until it’s installed under the sink. Note: It’s probably a good idea to shut off power at the breaker now, so as to avoid forgetting to shut it off later. If there’s anything worse than being shocked by a live wire, it’s being shocked by a live wire while under a sink.

If there’s an existing disposal, use the handy self-service wrenchette to disengage the old unit from the bottom of the sink. It will fit in the holes on bottom piece of the bracket. Twist the bottom piece clockwise while supporting the bottom to get it free.

How to Install a Garbage Disposal - Wiring

Photo: Kit Stansley

Step 2: Dishwasher Punch Out Option
This is not something you do with a misbehaving machine, but it’s a very crucial step if you have a dishwasher and you want it to work. If you don’t have a dishwasher you can skip directly to Step 3. For everyone else, there’s a little plug inside the dishwasher connection which needs to be punched out with a screwdriver and hammer. Again, only do this if you are attaching a line from a dishwasher at the time of installation.

How to Install a Garbage Disposal - Plumbers Putty

Photo: Kit Stansley

Step 3: Installing the Drain
If there was an existing disposal attached to the sink already, it’s likely that the new unit will fit the existing bracket. If not—or if there is no disposal currently in place—start by removing the old drain. Most drains are attached to the sink by a large nut underneath the sink that can be turned counter-clockwise to loosen.

Installing the new drain is a simple matter: First, create a snake out of plumber’s putty and circle the drain from the top. Then install the top half of the drain from the top, and screw the nut and mounting bracket on from underneath. Make sure to remove any excess plumber’s putty using a putty knife.

Step 4: Installing New Unit
Position the unit so the existing pipes/hoses line up, and then use your self-service wrenchette to move the bottom piece of the mounting bracket counter-clockwise until tight.

Then attach the waste pipe (and dishwasher hose, if applicable).  If your unit is outlet-ready—pay attention to this part—make sure your disposal switch is in the “off” position before you plug the new unit in. While it’s unlikely that having a disposal start up while your head is pressed against it will lead to decapitation, it may scare a couple of years off your life. Not that I would know from experience.

If you need to hardwire the unit, make sure the power is off to the box (I recommend shutting it off at the breaker) and then attach the wires to the corresponding color using wire nuts.

Once the unit is plugged or wired in, turn the breaker back on, run the water and have fun chopping food waste to bits!

Some helpful tips for repairing small and large holes in your drywall

Some helpful tips for repairing small and large holes in your drywall

Follow these step-by-step DIY methods for repairing small and large holes in your drywall.

Patching Damaged Drywall

Photo: flickr.com

The Virtues of Drywall
Drywall has been the wall finishing material of choice for most of a century because it’s so easy to install and finish. Another of its virtues is that when it’s damaged, it’s easy to repair. For scratches or small dents, a quick swipe of joint compound with a 3- or 4-inch putty knife and a bit of sanding before priming and painting will do fine. For small holes up to 3 inches, self-adhesive plastic mesh tape and then a coat or two of patching compound will work. For medium-sized holes between 4 and 6 inches, try a drywall bandage.

Patching Drywall
Check to make sure there is no electrical wiring in the area first, then use a keyhole saw to cut the hole into a neat square or rectangle. Transfer that shape onto a piece of new drywall, add 2-inch margins and cut out the larger patch piece. Trim off the back and gypsum in the 2-inch margin but leave the face paper uncut. Spread patching compound around the outside edges of the hole and press the bandage into it, feathering the edges. Let it dry. Then sand and re-coat with compound. Finally, sand again, prime and paint.

Patching Large Holes
For really big holes, you can use the tie and twist bracing method. Cut a piece of drywall or a length of 2×4 a few inches larger than the hole. Drill two small holes in the center and loop a 2-foot string through it like a button. Tie the ends around the middle of a stick. Apply adhesive to the back edges of the hole inside the wall. Adhere the patch piece and twist the stick from your side of the wall until it holds tight. Then, fill the remaining space with drywall patch pieces and mesh tape. Finish with compound as usual, cutting the string and pulling it out just before it dries.

Patching Super-Size Holes
For super-large holes bigger than a foot wide, cut the drywall back to the two nearest studs and expose them halfway. Cut a new panel of drywall to fit and attach it as you normally would with drywall screws, joint compound, and tape.

You want your furniture to look fresh and clean?

You want your furniture to look fresh and clean?

You want your furniture to look fresh and clean. You have invested money and time into your sofa, love seat, and chairs. More importantly, your furniture creates the first impression your guests see when they enter your home. To protect your furniture from becoming dingy, you will want to maintain the fabric with regular cleaning. In addition, a spill on your furniture requires immediate upholstery cleaning to avoid setting stains. While home remedies may work in some cases, professional upholstery cleaning will usually produce the best results. Carpet cleaning companies offer quality upholstery cleaning service.

Routine Upholstery Cleaning in Arlington Texas

Dirt and dust can collect on the fabric of your upholstery. In addition to making your furniture look dingy, dirt and dust can cause stains if it becomes wet. Be sure to vacuum your upholstery weekly, working in short left to right strokes to prevent dust from settling into the fabric. To get in the cracks and crevices of your furniture, use an upholstery attachment. To get into button tufting and other tight spaces, blast away dust with a can of compressed air. If you have pets, be sure to remove as much hair as possible. A vacuum may not be sufficient for pet hair, and you may need to find an effective pet hair remover designed for upholstery cleaning.

Emergency Upholstery Cleaning in Arlington Texas

Spills are the most common source of upholstery stains. When a spill happens, time is of the essence. You don’t want to let the spill soak into the fabric, furniture stuffing, or wood. Here are a few tips to keep in mind for emergency upholstery cleaning. First get a white cloth and blot the spill. Never scrub or rub it as this can set the stain. Try to keep the spill from spreading into a larger area. Next, add a little mild dish soap to water. After testing it on an inconspicuous spot of the fabric, blot the solution onto the spill, using only enough to just cover it. Let the spot dry completely. If the fabric has a high pile, brush the fibers in the correct direction. Tip: If you have spilled grease on your furniture, sprinkle a little cornstarch on the spill and let it sit for 30 minutes. When it has absorbed the oil, vacuum it up.

Stains

If your upholstery has stains, there are a few steps you can try before a professional upholstering cleaning. First vacuum the stained area thoroughly to try to fade the stain. Next check your upholstery’s cleaning instructions to determine whether you can clean with water or must use other cleaners like vinegar or chemical solvents. Many pieces of furniture may not have instructions, especially if they are vintage or antique. In this case, test the cleaner on a hidden spot of fabric.

If your upholstery can be cleaned with water, use a little steam to loosen the stain and make it easier to treat. The steam button on an iron can work for this in a small area. Dip a sponge in a mild dish soap and water solution, wring out the sponge, and blot the stain. Do not rub as this can weaken or pill your fabric. Press it dry with a clean cloth. If water can’t be used, try a little vinegar or vodka on a cloth. When the area is dry, the smell will disappear. If these steps don’t work, you can turn to one of the many upholstery cleaning products commercially available.

Professional Upholstery Cleaning in Arlington

If this sounds too complicated, or you have tried it unsuccessfully, you may prefer to contact a professional carpet cleaning company to handle your upholstery cleaning. Your furniture is an investment, and a professional upholstery cleaning will give you the best results. While you might save a little money trying to clean stains yourself, there is no substitute for the experience of a quality carpet cleaning service.

Dirty carpets make clean rooms look dirty

Your home’s carpets are always getting walked on, stepped on, spilled on and more. Because they’re some of the dirtiest and most used floor surfaces in your home, it’s important that you keep them clean so that they look their best. This is especially true if you own pets or have kids! Dirty carpets make clean rooms look dirty no matter how much you try to get the space squeaky clean. Neglected carpets can also pose various health risks since bacteria and germs like to thrive in dirty carpets, causing harm to you and your family’s immune systems. Still not convinced your carpets should always been clean? Here are some more reasons why you should care about clean your carpets are and invest in quality carpet cleaning products!

The Importance Of Keeping Your Carpet Cleaner Than Ever for Arlington TX homeowners
Dirty carpets can really ruin the life of your home’s carpeting, making you have to replace them a lot sooner than expected. This means shelling out more money to have the room re-carpeted or having to spend extra money on new rugs. If you’d like to save your money for other home improvements, keep your carpets and rugs clean using the right carpet cleaning products. This way you’ll be able to prolong the life of your carpet just by adding the right carpet cleaner to your cleaning products arsenal.

Another reason to invest in the right carpet cleaner is to improve your home’s indoor air quality. Carpets have a tendency to trap airborne pollutants that can pollute the air that you and your family breathe, which can cause allergies to act up or other breathing problems to occur. DIY or by hiring a specialized service provider

Remember how proud you felt on the day when the new couch that you had selected after a painstaking process was delivered to your home? In such situations, pride is invariably accompanied by a strong resolve to do everything possible that would help preserve the new look of your upholstery. However, as days go by this new look is bound to be replaced by a dull look owing to a layer of dust having settled on the surface. And heart-breaking though it might be, equally inevitable it is for something to spill and leave a dark patch on the fabric which is bound to look ugly and unsightly. It is at this point that upholstery cleaning comes into play.

While it is virtually impossible for the new look to continue indefinitely, what is definitely within your purview as a homeowner is to think in terms of regular upholstery cleaning, either DIY or by hiring a specialized service provider. Irrespective of whether you undertake the task or hire professional upholstery cleaning service, certain steps that remain common are –

Vacuum Cleaning

Vacuum cleaning always forms the first step of any upholstery cleaning procedure and it entails running the vacuum cleaner all over the fabric, including cracks, crevices and cushion.

One fine day you might just look at the sofa or couch and realize that it appears too dull and faded. This is attributed to the layer of dust that might have settled over the days or dirt that might have accumulated due to a multitude of factors like children, pets, guests and so on. The purpose of vacuum cleaning is to remove as much dust, grime, pet’s hair without having to wet the surface so that these contaminants do not dissolve in water and sink further into the fabric.

Spot Cleaning

Given that your upholstery is a catch basin for variety of spills and droppings, spot cleaning forms an important part of the upholstery cleaning procedure and entails dealing with individual stains one by one.

A useful DIY tip in this regard recommends that a fresh spill should be immediately blotted by a white cloth so that much of the liquid is absorbed before it soaks into the fabric of the upholstery. Most people make the mistake of scrubbing or rubbing the stain with a wet cloth which would not just cause it to spread but also penetrate deeper into the fibers of the upholstery.

Blotting is a crucial part of upholstery cleaning because it limits the stain to a particular area wherein it can either be treated by the home owner or removed by a professional cleaner through application of an appropriate cleaning agent.

Identifying Cleaning Agent for Cleaning Upholstery

Choice of cleaning agent depends on two main factors, first among which is the type of fabric of the upholstery.

Decoding the fabric of the upholstery is probably the most seminal step in upholstery cleaning since not only does the choice of cleaning agent depend on it but also the cleaning technique to be applied. Fabric could vary from cotton and wool to silk, rayon, acrylic and leather and each would need to be handled in a different way owing to its unique characteristics. For example, the cleaning agent and technique that you use for cleaning cotton upholstery would be different from the way in which leather upholstery would be handled.

Usually reputed and reliable upholstery cleaning service providers are aware of the difference between fabrics courtesy of their training and know-how to handle the situation. A home owner, in comparison, may not be as well-informed and must make it a point to explore this aspect before taking any step. To this effect, tags can prove to be extremely informative as regards the dos’ and don’ts pertaining to the upholstery fabric and should be treated by every home owner as a valuable guideline.

Stain Removal

Another factor that determines which cleaning agent should be used is the nature of the stain. Like upholstery, stains are also of different types and mainly categorized based on their source, for example food, drinks, oil, grease, urine and so on. Since each would require a different cleaning agent, the onus is on the individual – professional or home owner – to decode how to handle it best.

Not only should the cleaning agent be effective in extracting particles of dirt and grime from between the fibers but it should also not have any negative impact on the environment.

Important Dos’ and Don’ts of Upholstery Cleaning

· If possible, upholstery should be shielded from receiving the direct rays of the sun since it could cause fading and discoloration, thus spoiling the entire look.

· While using candles, you must make it a point to keep them away from your upholstery so as to prevent wax from dripping on to the fabric.

· Spraying your upholstery with a protector would enable you to maintain a clean and fresh look not to mention shield your upholstery from stains.

· It is advisable not to use too much water while cleaning upholstery since it would cause the fabric to remain wet for a prolonged duration and render it susceptible to growth of microbes, mould and mildew.

· After cleaning upholstery, it is important to ventilate the room well by switching on fans and opening windows so that the drying up process is short and efficient.
